इस कविता में कवयित्री शर्ली टॉल्सन ने हमें मानव जीवन के बारे में बताया है। यह अल्पकालिक है। बचपन जवानी में ढल जाता है। जवानी ढलती है बुढ़ापा। मनुष्य अतीत की स्मृतियों को याद कर उदास हो जाता है। आइए अब कवयित्री की माँ के बारे में पढ़ें और जीवन की तीन अवस्थाएँ जानें।

The picture pasted on the cardboard shows the poet’s mother and her two cousins, Betty and Dolly, who accompanied the poet’s mother on a beach outing. Each of them is holding a hand of the poet’s mother, who was then an older girl of about twelve. His uncle had a camera. All three were standing in front of the camera. She has smiled by removing hair from her face to be photographed. Thus the picture presents three smiling faces. The poet’s mother has a very lovely face. This was before the birth of the poet. In that picture, his feet are in the seawater. The poet writes that the sea which seems to have changed little but the face of his mother has changed with time.

Some twenty or thirty years later, the poet’s mother used to laugh at the picture. She remembers referring to the picture of how Betty and Dolly had prepared themselves for the beach for a beach vacation. She laughs seeing his poor dress. This sea holiday was a pastime for the poet’s mother. And today for the poet his mother’s laughter has become a thing of the past.

Now almost as many years have passed since the poet’s mother died as she had been alive. The poet has fallen short of words to comment on this incident i.e. his death. It is a sad moment and its silence silences her. Thus the poetess pays tribute to her mother. And looking at that old picture of his mother with two cousins, she breaks down.

कार्डबोर्ड पर चिपकाई गई तस्वीर में कवि की माँ और उनकी दो चचेरी बहनों बेट्टी और डॉली को दिखाया गया है जो कवि की माँ के साथ समुद्र के तट पर घूमने गई थीं। उनमें से प्रत्येक ने कवि की माँ का एक हाथ पकड़ा हुआ है, जो उस समय लगभग बारह वर्ष की एक बड़ी लड़की थी। उनके चाचा के पास कैमरा था। तीनों कैमरे के सामने खड़े थे। वे फोटो खिंचवाने के लिए चेहरे से बालों को हटाकर मुस्कुरायी हैं। इस प्रकार यह तस्वीर तीन मुस्कुराते चेहरों को प्रस्तुत करती है। कवि की माँ का चेहरा बहुत प्यारा है। यह कवि के जन्म से पहले की बात है। उस तस्वीर में उनके पैर समुद्र के पानी में हैं। कवि लिखते हैं की समुन्द्र जो कम बदला हुआ प्रतीत होता है लेकिन उनके माँ का चेहरा समय के साथ बदल गया है।

कुछ बीस या तीस साल बीत जाने के बाद, कवि की माँ उस तस्वीर को देखकर हँस पड़ती थी। वह तस्वीर का जिक्र करते हुए याद करती हैं कि कैसे बेट्टी और डॉली ने समुद्र तट पर छुट्टी मनाने के लिए खुद को समुद्र तट के लिए तैयार किया था। उनके घटिया ड्रेस देखकर वह हँसती हैं। यह समुद्री अवकाश कवि के माँ के लिए एक अतीत की घटना थी। और आज कवि के लिए उनके माँ की हँसी एक अतीत की घटना हो गई है।

अब कवि की माँ को मरे हुए लगभग उतने ही वर्ष बीत गए हैं जितने वर्ष वह जिंदा रही थीं। इस घटना यानि उनकी मृत्यु पर टिप्पणी करने के लिए कवि के पास शब्द कम पड़ गए हैं। यह एक दुखदायी क्षण है और इसकी चुप्पी उसे चुप कराती है। इस प्रकार कवयित्री अपनी माँ को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करती हैं। और उनकी माँ की दो चचेरी बहनों के साथ उस पुरानी तस्वीर को देखकर वह खामोश हो जाती हैं।

When the two girl cousins went paddling,
Each one holding one of my mother’s hands,
And she the big girl-some twelve years or so.
All three stood still to smile through their hair

My mother’s, that was before I was born.
And the sea, which appears to have changed less,
Washed their terribly transient feet.

Explanation: Looking at an old picture of her mother, the poet writes that I can know from this picture how it seemed at that time when two cousins were singing and splashing in the water holding my mother’s arm. She was an older girl who was about twelve years old. And all three of them stood still, smiling through their hair, looking at the uncle with the camera. At that time when I was not even born, my mother’s face was very lovely. And the sea which seems to have changed very little, was washing their very ephemeral feet.

Explanation: The poetess writes about that picture and some memories associated with her mother.
