Bishamber Nath was a rich grocer from a nearby village. He had a big shop, his own house and lots of money in his bank. The children of his first wife had grown up. His age was almost equal to Bholi’s father’s age. He used to limp too. His marriage to Bholi was fixed. But when he came to know that the bride had smallpox marks on her face, he demanded five thousand rupees as dowry from Ramlal. Bholi’s father Ramlal pleaded with him and also placed his turban at his feet, but Bishamber remained adamant on his demand. In the end, Ramlal gave the entire five thousand in cash to Bishamber. However, Bholi refused to accept such a greedy, cowardly and heartless man as her husband.

बिशम्बर नाथ पास के गाँव का एक धनी पंसारी था। उसके पास एक बड़ी दुकान, स्वयं का मकान और उसके बैंक में ढ़ेर सारे पैसे थे। उसकी पहली पत्नी के बच्चे काफी बड़े हो चुके थे। उसकी उम्र लगभग भोली के पिता के उम्र के बराबर थी। वह लँगड़ाता भी था। उसका विवाह भोली से होना तय हुआ था। लेकिन जब उसको पता चला कि दुल्हन के चेहरे पर चेचक के निशान हैं तो उसने रामलाल से दहेज के रूप में पाँच हजार रुपये की माँग की। भोली के पिता रामलाल ने उससे विनती की और अपनी पगड़ी भी उसके चरणों में रख दी, लेकिन बिशम्बर ने अपने माँग पर अड़ा रहा। अंत में रामलाल पूरे पाँच हज़ार बिशम्बर को नकद दिया। हालांकि, भोली ने ऐसे लोभी, कायर और निर्दयी व्यक्ति को अपने पति के रूप में स्वीकार करने से मना कर दिया।

Ramlal was a prosperous farmer of the village. There was no dearth of food and drink in his house. He was a rigid and narrow-minded person. He was also the Numberdar of the village. Being a hard worker, he was a well-respected person in the village. He had seven children – three sons and four daughters, of whom Bholi was his youngest. All her children were healthy except Bholi. Ramlal sent only boys to the city for higher education. This shows that he did not pay much attention to the education of girls. But the only reason he sent Bholi to school was because of Tehsildar’s pressure. His other three girls were easily married as they were all healthy and beautiful but he was very worried about Bholi as she had become ugly and was also retarded.
