Q.1. Describe the friendship between Khushwant Singh and his grandmother.
Ans. When Khushwant Singh lived with his grandmother in the village as a child, he was nourished by his grandmother. She used to wake him up early in the morning. She used to sing her prayers while bathing and dressing them. Then she would give him stale chapatis for breakfast with butter and sugar. Then they would go to the temple school together and return home together. Thus they became good friends but a turning point in their friendship came when their parents called them to the city to study. Here his grandmother could not help him much. Khushwant Singh took to music, science and new subjects while his grandmother hated western education. So gradually the link of their friendship became loose.

She always wore spotless white clothes. His hair looked like silver. She was very affectionate. She always used to worship God. She was so divinely devoted to praying to God that she did not leave her rosary till her death. She used to feed the village dogs and feed the birds. This shows his affection towards animals. Even the birds loved him so much that they did not even eat a piece of bread on his death. Surely she was a saintly and gentle lady.
