The chapter “A Letter to God” is about a hardworking farmer named Lencho who makes his living by farming. Lencho’s house was the only one in the whole valley on top of a low hill. He could easily inspect his corn crops from that height. One year, he is expected to have a good harvest. The crops needed rain or at least one shower.
During dinner, as Lencho expected, large drops of rain begin to fall. Lencho was very happy to see the rain and went out of the house to enjoy the rain. He treats raindrops as new silver coins. But suddenly huge hailstones start falling. The hailstorms rained for about an hour which destroys his entire corn crops.
Now all the happiness of Lencho turns into sorrow but he has strong faith in God. In desperation, he writes a letter to God and asks God for a hundred pesos to help him and his family survive until the next harvest.
Lencho’s letter is sent through the post office, and when the postmaster reads it, he is moved by Lencho’s faith in God and decides to help Lencho. He collects money from his employees and also gives a part of his own salary. Yet he manages to collect only seventy pesos. He puts the collected money in an envelope and writes Lencho’s address on it.
The postmaster writes the name of the sender on that letter on behalf of God. When Lencho arrives at the post office to check his mail, the postman himself delivers the letter to him. The postmaster was watching everything from his office. Lencho opens the envelope and counts the money. He gets angry because the money is less than what he asked for in the letter.
He thinks, God cannot be wrong, surely the post office employees must have stolen some money. Immediately, Lencho goes to the window to ask for paper and ink. He would write another letter to God to send the rest of the money. But he requests God not to send the money through the post because according to him the post office employees were a bunch of crooks.
