Parts of Speech Introduction: Whenever we speak or write, we use words to express our thoughts. However, not all words perform the same function. Some words name people or things, some describe qualities, some express actions, while others connect words or express emotions.

What are Parts of Speech?

Read the following sentence:

Rekha is a very beautiful girl.

Each word in this sentence performs a different function.

Although all these words are used together to form one sentence, each performs a different job. The classification of words according to the function they perform in a sentence is called Parts of Speech.

A Part of Speech is the grammatical category of a word based on the function it performs in a sentence.

The Eight Parts of Speech

Traditionally, English grammar has eight parts of speech.

Note: In modern English grammar, Articles (a, an, the) and Determiners (this, that, some, many, each) are often studied separately. However, in traditional grammar, articles are usually treated as a type of adjective.

A Word Can Have Different Functions

One important point to remember is that a word does not always belong to only one part of speech. Its part of speech depends on how it is used in a sentence.

Example 1

The batsman scored only one run in the last over.

Here, run is the name of a score, so it is a noun.

Example 2

The soldiers run five kilometres every morning.

Here, the word ” run shows an action, so it is a verb.

Similarly, many English words can perform different functions depending on the sentence.
