What is a Noun?
Read the following sentences.
- Toto, the monkey, likes bananas.
- Nitin goes to the fair.
- Going to bed early is a good habit.
- Concentration is the key to success.
The highlighted words Toto, monkey, bananas, Nitin, fair, bed, habit, concentration, and success are all names of people, animals, places, things, or ideas.
These naming words are called nouns.

These are Proper Nouns.

2. Common Noun
Read the following sentences.
- I live in a village.
- Open your book.
- Here is a picture.
- Bittu saw birds and animals.
The words village, book, picture, birds, and animals do not refer to any particular person or thing. They represent a whole class.
These are Common Nouns.

A Common Noun is the general name of a person, place, animal, or thing belonging to the same class or kind.

The words herd, team, army, and bunch refer to groups.
These are Collective Nouns.

A Material Noun is the name of a substance or material from which things are made.

Most Material Nouns are uncountable nouns.
For example:

We generally do not say “two golds” or “three waters”.
5. Abstract Noun

- India got freedom in 1947.
- Always speak the truth.
- Honesty is the best policy.
The words harmony, freedom, truth, and honesty cannot be seen or touched. They represent ideas, qualities, feelings, or states.
These are Abstract Nouns.
