About the Lesson

The lesson Indigo recounts Mahatma Gandhi’s efforts to address the plight of peasants in Champaran, Bihar, during 1917. About the Author

Louis Fischer (1896–1970) was a journalist and author born in Philadelphia. He served in the British Army from 1918 to 1920. Fischer contributed articles to The New York Times, The Saturday Review, and various European and Asian publications. He also taught at Princeton University. The excerpt in Indigo is from his book The Life of Mahatma Gandhi, regarded as one of the finest works on Gandhi.
