The Ball Poem Class 10 Hindi Explanation

[1] What is the boy now, who has lost his ball,
What, what is he to do? I saw it go
Merrily bouncing, down the street, and then
Merrily over-there it is in the water!

[2] No use to say ‘O there are other balls;
An ultimate shaking grief fixes the boy
As he stands rigid, trembling, staring down
All his young days into the harbour where
His ball went.

[3] I would not intrude on him;
A dime, another ball, is worthless. Now
He senses first responsibility
In a world of possessions. People will take
Balls, balls will be lost always, little boy.

[4] And no one buys a ball back. Money is external.
He is learning, well behind his desperate eyes,
The epistemology of loss, how to stand up
Knowing what every man must one day know
And most know many days, how to stand up.

The Ball Poem Class 10 Summary

A little boy has lost his ball. It went bouncing merrily down the street and fell into the water of the harbour. It is useless to tell him that other balls can be bought, for he is shaken by a deep grief. He stands stiff and trembling, staring down into the water as though all his happy childhood days had gone down with the ball.

The poet does not disturb him and does not offer him money for a new ball, because a dime is worthless here; money cannot buy back what has been lost. The boy is now feeling his first sense of responsibility in a world of possessions. He is learning, behind his hopeless eyes, the true nature of loss: that things will always be lost, that no one can buy them back, and that he must learn to stand up and go on. This is a lesson every person must learn one day.

The Ball Poem Central idea

A boy loses his ball and, with it, his childhood. The poet refuses to console him or offer money, because the boy has to learn a lesson no one can learn for him: in a world of possessions, things will be lost, no money can buy them back, and one must accept the loss and stand up again. The themes are loss and grief, growing up from innocence into responsibility, the gap between the price of a thing and its worth, and the need to face sorrow on one’s own.
