Adrienne Cecil Rich (May 16, 1929 – March 27, 2012) was an American poet, essayist, and feminist. She has been called “one of the most widely read and influential poets of the late 20th century”, and credited with bringing “the oppression of women and lesbians to the forefront of poetic discourse”. Rich criticized rigid forms of feminist identity and coined the “lesbian continuum”, a continuum of female solidarity and creativity that affects and fills women’s lives.

His first poetry collection, A Change of World, was selected by the icon W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. Auden wrote the introduction to the book. Rich famously declined the National Medal of Arts to protest House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s vote to end funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

The poem opens with a strange announcement: the trees kept inside the house are moving out into the forest. That forest has stood empty for a long time; no bird could sit in it, no insect could hide there, and the sun could not bury its feet in shadow. By morning, the poet says, it will be full of trees again.

All night the roots struggle to free themselves from the cracks in the veranda floor, the leaves strain towards the glass, the small twigs grow stiff with effort, and the long-cramped boughs shuffle under the roof like newly discharged patients moving unsteadily towards the clinic doors.

The Tree Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is about the urge of every living thing to return to the place where it belongs. The trees have been kept indoors as decoration, and no matter how carefully they are tended, a veranda is not a forest. Their night-long struggle to free their roots is nature’s protest against being owned and confined by man, who cuts down whole forests and then keeps a few potted plants for beauty.
