इस कविता में कवि ने संसार के अंत के विषय में दो अत्यंत प्रचलित विचार प्रस्तुत किये हैं। कवि लिखते हैं कि कुछ लोग कहते हैं कि संसार का अंत आग से होगा वहीं कुछ लोग बर्फ को संसार के अंत का कारण बताते हैं। अब यहाँ पर आग और बर्फ दो अलग-अलग शब्द हैं। कवि ने इस कविता में आग की तुलना इच्छा से की है और बर्फ की तुलना घृणा से की है। कवि कहते हैं कि लेकिन मैंने जहाँ तक इच्छा का परिक्षण किया है, उसके आधार पर मैं उन लोगों के साथ में हूँ जो आग (इच्छा) के पक्ष में हैं।

फिर कवि लिखते हैं कि लेकिन अगर यह दो बार नष्ट हो तो मुझे लगता है कि मैं नफ़रत के बारे में भी काफी जानता हूँ। यह कहना कि बर्फ इस संसार को नष्ट कर सकती है यह भी ठीक है और पर्याप्त होगा। अर्थात आग यानि इच्छा तो संसार को नष्ट कर ही सकता है लेकिन बर्फ यानी घृणा भी संसार को नष्ट करने के लिए पर्याप्त है।

वहीं दूसरी ओर ‘घृणा’ किसी व्यक्ति या वस्तु को नापसंद करने का परिणाम है। जब मनुष्य किसी को नापसंद करने लगता है तो उसको उस मनुष्य से घृणा हो जाती है; और जब मनुष्य को एक दूसरे से घृणा हो जाती है तो यही से विवाद का जन्म होता है; और जब विवाद होता है तो इसे युद्ध में बदलने में तनिक भी समय नहीं लगता; और इतिहास साक्षी है कि युद्ध मानवजाति को हमेशा विनाश के ओर ही लेकर गया है।

इस तरह से ये कहना ज़रा भी गलत नहीं होगा कि इच्छा और घृणा ये दोनों ही मनुष्य को बर्बाद कर सकते हैं।
