The Tale of Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash is a humorous ballad. A little girl named Belinda lived in a little white house with four pets: a black kitten called Ink, a grey mouse called Blink, a yellow dog called Mustard, and a pet dragon called Custard. Belinda and the three small pets were said to be very brave, but Custard, in spite of his sharp teeth, spikes, scales and dagger-like claws, always cried for a nice safe cage. So everyone made fun of him and called him a coward.
One day a pirate with two pistols and a cutlass in his teeth climbed in through the window. At once all the “brave” ones ran away. Mustard fled with a yelp, Ink hid at the bottom of the house, Blink slipped into his mousehole, and Belinda cried for help. Only Custard jumped up, attacked the pirate and swallowed him whole. Everyone then hugged and praised him. But soon the others began boasting again, saying they would have been braver if they had not been nervous. Custard humbly agreed that everybody was braver than him, and life went back to just as it was before.
