Adrienne Cecil Rich (May 16, 1929 – March 27, 2012) was an American poet, essayist, and feminist. Rich criticized rigid forms of feminist identity and coined the “lesbian continuum”, a continuum of female solidarity and creativity that affects and fills women’s lives.

His first poetry collection, A Change of World, was selected by the icon W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award. Auden wrote the introduction to the book. Rich famously declined the National Medal of Arts to protest House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s vote to end funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

The poem ‘The Trees’ is about the plants that we use to decorate our house. These plants are planted in small pots to enhance the beauty of the houses. Man has imprisoned nature within his four walls. They have uprooted trees from huge forests and put them in artificial glass houses.

This poem shows how man has harmed nature for his selfish needs. The poem ‘The Trees’ by Adrienne Rich is about embellished pants. These plants are grown within the four walls and cannot help birds and insects in any way. Neither birds can sit on the branches nor insects can hide in them. They don’t cast any shadow. Their branches are hard. His branches are like a newly discharged patient. They are devoid of light. Their leaves run towards the glass window for light because they feel suffocated in their tiny pots.

The poetess is sitting in her room. She is writing long letters. It is night time and she can smell the smell of leaves and lichen inside her room. [1] The trees inside are moving out into the forest.
the forest that was empty all these days
where no bird could sit
no insect hide
no sun bury its feet in shadow
the forest that was empty all these nights
will be full of trees by morning.
कवयित्री लिखती हैं कि जो पेड़ अन्दर की तरफ थे वे बाहर जंगल में खिसक रहे हैं। वह जंगल जो इतने दिनों से खाली था, जहाँ पर कोई पक्षी नहीं बैठ सकता था, कोई कीड़ा (कीट) नहीं छिप सकता था, कोई सूर्य अपने किरणों रूपी पैर की छाया में नहीं छिपा सकता था, वह जंगल जो उन रातों को खाली था, सुबह तक पेड़ों से भर जायेगा।

to disengage themselves from the cracks
in the veranda floor.
The leaves strain toward the glass
small twigs stiff with exertion
long-cramped boughs shuffling under the roof
like newly discharged patients
half-dazed, moving
to the clinic doors.
सारी रात जड़ें बरामदे के फर्श की दरारों से स्वयं को मुक्त कराने का कार्य करती हैं। पत्तियाँ शीशे की तरफ दबाव डालती हैं। छोटी टहनियाँ अधिक प्रयास के कारण ऐंठ जाती हैं। लम्बी-तंग शाखाएँ छत के नीचे रगड़ खाकर ऐसी हो गई है मानो जैसे क्लीनिक के दरवाजों से बाहर आते हुए अभी-अभी छुट्टी हुए कुछ भौंचक्के मरीज हो।

The night is fresh, the whole moon shines

कवयित्री कहती है कि मैं बरामदे की ओर खुलने वाले दरवाजों को खुला रखकर अन्दर बैठी हुई हूँ और लम्बे-लम्बे पत्र लिख रही हूँ जिनमें मैं मुश्किल से ही घर से जंगल के प्रस्थान की चर्चा करती हूँ। रात्रि एकदम साफ है और पूरा चन्द्रमा अब भी खुले आकाश में चमक रहा है। एक आवाज की भाँति पत्तियों व शैवाल (काई) की महक कमरों में पहुँच रही है।

कवयित्री कहती है मेरा सिर उन फुसफुसाहटों से भरा हुआ है जो कल शान्त हो जायेंगी। सुनो, शीशा टूट रहा है। रात में पेड़ लड़खड़ाते हुए आगे जा रहे हैं। हवाएँ उनसे मिलने के लिए तेजी से चल रही हैं। सबसे ऊँचे बलूत के वृक्ष के बीच में चमकता हुआ चाँद शीशे की भाँति टूटा हुआ प्रतीत हो रहा है। इसके टुकड़े अब सबसे लम्बे बलूत के पेड़ के ताज में चमक रहे हैं।
