यहाँ कवयत्री एशियाई शेर के विषय में बात कर रही हैं। संयोग से अगर आपको कभी पूर्व के जंगलों में जाना हो, और यहाँ पर एक लम्बा तथा भूरे-पीले रंग का जानवर आपकी ओर आगे बढ़े, वह आप पर इस प्रकार दहाड़े कि आप मरने वाले हो को हों तो आप जान जायेंगे कि यह एक एशियाई शेर है…

[2] Or if some time when roaming round,
A noble wild beast greets you,
With black stripes on a yellow ground,
Just notice if he eats you.
This simple rule may help you learn
The Bengal Tiger to discern.
यहाँ कवयत्री बंगाल के बाघ के विषय में बात कर रही हैं। यदि किसी समय भटकते हुए व्यक्ति का सामना एक शाही जंगली जानवर से हो जाए, जिसके पीले शरीर पर काली धारियाँ हो, तो केवल ये ध्यान रखिये कि कहीं वह आपको खा न जाए। ‘उसका भयावह होना’ यह सरल नियम है जो आपको यह जानने में मदद करेगा कि यह बंगाल का बाघ है।

[3] If strolling forth, a beast you view,
Whose hide with spots is peppered,
As soon as he has lept on you,
You’ll know it is the Leopard,
Twill do no good to roar with pain,
He’ll only lep and lep again.
यहाँ कवयत्री तेंदुए के विषय में बात कर रही हैं। यदि आगे टहलते हुए किसी को एक ऐसा जानवर दिखाई दे जिसकी खाल धब्बों से ढकी हुई हो और यह तेजी से छलांग लगाये तो वह जानवर अवश्य ही एक तेंदुआ होगा। दर्द से चीखने से कोई लाभ नहीं होगा क्योंकि तेंदुआ बार-बार उछलता ही रहेगा।

[4] If when you’re walking round your yard
You meet a creature there,
Who hugs you very, very hard,
Be sure it is a Bear.
If you have any doubts, I guess
He’ll give you just one more caress.
यहाँ कवयत्री भालू के विषय में बात कर रही हैं। यदि जब आप अपने आँगन के आस-पास घूम रहे हों और आपको एक प्राणी मिल जाता है जो आपसे बहुत जोर से गले लगता है, तो विश्वास कीजिये कि यह एक भालू है। यदि आपको कोई सन्देह है तो मेरा अनुमान है कि वह आपको एक बार फिर से प्यार से स्पर्श करेगा।

[5] Though to distinguish beasts of prey
A novice might nonplus,
The Crocodile you always may
Tell from the Hyena thus:
Hyenas come with merry smiles;
But if they weep they’re Crocodiles.
यहाँ कवयत्री लकड़बग्घा और मगरमच्छ के बीच अंतर स्पष्ट कर रही हैं। जिस व्यक्ति को जानवरों के विषय में अधिक ज्ञात नहीं है, वह उन्हें पहचानने में गलती कर सकता है। लेकिन ऐसे व्यक्ति भी लकड़बग्घे और मगरमच्छ की पहचान तथा उनमें अन्तर सरलता से कर सकते हैं। ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि लकड़बग्धे हमेशा पहले से ही मुस्कुराते हुए दिखाई देते हैं और मगरमच्छ हमेशा आँसू बहाते हुए दिखाई देते हैं।

[6] The true Chameleon is small,
A lizard sort of thing;
He hasn’t any ears at all,
And not a single wing.
If there is nothing on the tree,
Tis the chameleon you see.
यहाँ कवयत्री गिरगिट के विषय में बात कर रही हैं। एक वास्तविक गिरगिट एक छिपकली की भाँति छोटा जीव होता है। उसके कोई कान नहीं होते है तथा एक भी पंख नहीं होता है। यदि पेड़ पर कुछ नहीं है तो जो आप देखते हैं वह गिरगिट होता है।
