कवि जानवरों के साथ रहना चाहता है और एक ऐसे जीवन का अनुभव करना चाहता है जहाँ कोई शिकायत न करे, और जहाँ हर कोई पापों और दुखों से मुक्त हो। कविता का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण विषय जानवरों की प्रशंसा करना नहीं है, बल्कि उनकी प्रकृति की खामियों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करने के लिए मनुष्यों की उनके साथ तुलना करना है।

In this poem, the poet Walt Whitman compares humans to animals. He finds that human beings lack many of the qualities that animals have. The poet says that he feels better with animals than with humans because humans are selfish, liars and always dissatisfied, while animals are selfless, truthful and more content. They show their love for us.

The poet Walt Whitman explicitly states that he feels more comfortable and good with animals than with fellow humans. His faith in the race of man has grown so much that he wants to ‘turn around’ and change his position with the animals. Man has gone mad running after material wealth. It has become a bundle of complications, contradictions and illusions. Their conscience is not clear and hence they suffer from nightmares and cry for their sins. Animals, on the other hand, are calm, self-sufficient and content. They do not run after material things other than their food. They do not need to worship God as they never suffer from the feeling of guilt or sin.

The poet writes that the ancestors of man shared those symbols of love and understanding in the distant past. But unfortunately, humans have lost those qualities and marks of love and understanding forever.

इस कविता में कवि वॉल्ट व्हिटमैन ने मनुष्य की तुलना जानवरों से की है। वह पाते हैं कि मनुष्य में बहुत से गुणों का अभाव है जो जानवरों में है। कवि कहते हैं कि वह मनुष्यों से अधिक जानवरों के साथ अच्छा महसूस करते हैं क्योंकि मनुष्य स्वार्थी, झूठे और हमेशा असंतुष्ट रहते हैं, जबकि जानवर निःस्वार्थ, सच्चे और अधिक संतुष्ट होते हैं। वे हमारे लिए अपना प्यार दिखाते हैं।

[1] I think I could turn and live with animals, they are
so placid and self-contain’d,
I stand and look at them long and long.
कवि कहता है कि उसे लगता है कि उसे स्वयं में बदलाव लाना चाहिए और पशुओं के साथ रहना शुरू कर देना चाहिए। पशु अत्यंत शान्त व संयमी होते हैं। कवि खड़ा होकर बहुत समय तक उन्हें देखता रहता है।

[2] They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
कवि कहते हैं कि पशु मनुष्यों से अधिक अच्छा जीवन व्यतीत करते हैं। वे अपनी स्थिति के बारे में चिंतित नहीं होते हैं तथा रोती-सी आवाज में शिकायत नहीं करते हैं। वे अंधेरे में जागते हुए पड़े नहीं रहते हैं तथा अपने पापों के लिए नहीं रोते हैं। वे ईश्वर के प्रति अपने कर्तव्यों के बारे में गम्भीर विचार-विमर्श करते हुए दूसरों को उबाते नहीं हैं।

the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.
कोई भी अपने जिंदगी से असन्तुष्ट नहीं होता है, न ही कोई चीजों का स्वामी बनने को लेकर पागल होता है। कोई जानवर किसी दूसरे जानवर के सामने घुटने भी नहीं टेकता है। न ही कोई जानवर हजारों वर्ष पूर्व जीवन जीने वाले अपनी किस्म अर्थात प्रजाति के सामने घुटने टिकाता है। इस सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी पर कोई भी जानवर आदरणीय या दुःखी नहीं है, अर्थात् सभी जानवर एक जैसे हैं, उनमें कोई भेदभाव नहीं है।

[4] So they show their relations to me and I accept them,
They bring me tokens of myself, they evince
them plainly in their possession
I wonder where they get those tokens,
Did I pass that way huge times ago and negligently drop them?
पशु मनुष्यों के प्रति अपना प्यार दिखाते हैं और मनुष्य भी उसे स्वीकार कर लेते हैं। पशु मनुष्यों के प्रति उनके प्यार का उपहार लाते हैं। कवि कहते हैं कि पशु साधारण रूप से उसे अपने गुण दिखाते हैं वह बहुत उत्सुकतापूर्वक सोचता है कि उन्हें वे उपहार (गुण) कहाँ से प्राप्त हुए हैं। वह सोचते हैं कि कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं कि बहुत समय पहले वह वहाँ से गुजरा हो और उनसे वह उपहार गिर गया हो।
कवि कहना चाहते हैं कि मनुष्यों ने अपने मानवता के गुणों को खो दिया है लेकिन पशुओं में वे गुण अभी भी हैं।
